OCD Explained in Simple Terms Obsessive. Compulsive. Disorder

OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as the name states are categorized as an Anxiety Disorder. Let's analyze each part of this problem to understand what OCD really is.

The O in OCD (Obsessive)

Obsessions are intrusive or negative thoughts that cause distress in a person. These thoughts overpower the mind, and those suffering from OCD are unable to detach themselves from them. The constant intrusion of these thoughts, which primarily have some kind of fear as their core, keep troubling the person. This results in continuous worrying and high-stress levels resulting in low productivity, poor focus, guilt, anxiety, fear, low energy, and even depression.

The Intensity of anxiety due to these thoughts sometimes reaches very high levels making a person avoid triggers or coping mechanisms to deal with such negative thoughts. This further deteriorates their well being and hampers the quality of life.

A typical example of such Intrusive Obsessions would be fear of contamination. A patient suffering would always worry that their hands are not clean, and if they do not wash them, the germs will make them severely ill.

The C in OCD (Compulsion)

Compulsions are actions that a person adopts as a part of their coping mechanism for the anxiety caused by the Obsessive thoughts. These compulsions could be in the form of Thoughts or Actions or Both. Counting numbers, mental rituals, reassurance to self, etc. are Compulsions of Thoughts.

Tapping, checking, scratching, putting things in symmetry, cleaning, etc. are some examples of Compulsions of Actions. As per the above example of (Obsession) Hands not clean enough, the (Compulsion) that would follow would be to wash their hands.

The D in OCD (Disorder)

In OCD, the Intrusive Obsessions don't cease to stop, and the person suffering cannot help but doing the Compulsion that comes along with these thoughts. As per the above example, no matter how many times a person washes their hands, the thought would pop up again after some time, forcing them to clean their hands one more time. If they do not comply with this Obsession and Thought, Anxiety starts setting in.

Slowly, this Obsession takes over completely, forcing a person to wash their hands 20-30 or even more times in a day. When a person is unable to use intelligence and logic to this entire sequence of Obsession and Compulsion, it becomes a Disorder.

Can’t believe it worked!

“My work suffered & so did my family life. Anyone suffering from OCD knows how bad it can get. My OCD was stealing everything from me. I struggled for 4 years with multiple OCD’s and had completely given up that it can be resolved. Calm Breath is just AWESOME! I can’t express it enough how thankful I am! My wife notices my progress everyday and after a month the OCD episodes are less than 1 odd a week. After all i tried, it was my own breath that helped me. Can’t believe it worked.”

Don't give OCD a day more

“I don’t even remember when OCD attacked, and for a year I did not understand what was happening to me. Later I was diagnosed with OCD and the medicines given were only a temporary relief. I realized i had not one but many OCD’s and when I tried to resolve one, another one would come up. With the daily 30 mins breath excercises by Calm Breath, the negative thoughts have stopped having an impact on me.”
